15 East is comprised of two parts: the sushi bar and the dining room. When you enter the restaurant, you are immediately at the sushi bar. Seating nine, this lean, dark wood bar is accentuated by cylindrical pendant lighting that shines unobtrusively on the sushi that sits behind oblong panes of glass. Seats are comfortable, consisting of upholstered armless chairs. You might feel somewhat familiar in this room, as the architect, Richard Boch, also designed the high-end Masa in the Time Warner Center. The room is pristine and primarily white, which is in keeping with the Zen-like theme. A bench anchors the large window with colorful cushions that provide for a nice waiting area. Both the sushi bar and the bench are made of a red-brown African bubbinga wood that retains its natural tree edge. Just so you know, it's not all so serious; perpendicular to the sushi bar is a wall of cabinets of sake and the like.

Walking through a drapery from the sushi bar to the left is the elegant dining room, where diaphanous curtains decorate the windows that look out over 15th Street. Spotlights and track lighting provide illumination while fanciful music plays in the background, providing atmosphere. The room is very modern and streamlined. Several circular tables grace the windows, while banquettes and rectilinear tables align the wall. The walls are charcoal, the banquettes light grey with tables a light wood shade, adorned with crisp white napkins that contrast nicely with black painted wood floors beneath. Tables are generous; the size of a table for two is 30 inches in diameter, while circular tables are even roomier. Chairs are equally generous at 16 inches in diameter.
