When the city feels too big, too busy or too boisterous, New York locals know they can always seek respite on nearby Long Island. In fact, so can visitors, because at the eastern end of Long Island are the tourist - friendly towns of Southampton, East Hampton, Westhampton and Bridgehampton, which - along with many other neighboring towns, including Amagansett, Montauk and Quogue - are known collectively as "the Hamptons." Famous as a summer haven for New York's urban elite, the Hamptons are an ideal place to unwind - for a weekend or for an entire season - thanks to their quaint village appeal and their proximity to the ocean. Sandwiched between the Atlantic and some of Long Island's wealthiest real estate, the Hamptons' many parks and beaches offer sun-hungry visitors the chance to sunbathe, swim or sail their summer away.

There's more to see than sand, though, in these suburban hamlets. For one, there's the shopping. The Hamptons and surrounding cities are home to a smattering of upscale boutiques, chic shops and interesting art galleries. Or, if shopping isn't your thing, you can check out some of the area's many historical attractions and museums, including several working windmills - such as Hook Mill, which was built in 1806 - that stand as monuments to the area's agrarian and woodworking heritage. Other popular attractions include a host of sophisticated wineries and vineyards, as well as an impressive collection of magnificent mega-mansions, many of which belong to celebrities such as Martha Stewart, Jerry Seinfeld, Billy Joel and Steven Spielberg. The best part about the Hamptons, though? You needn't fight New York traffic to get there, as East Hampton Airport provides service to and from Manhattan via privately chartered jet or helicopter.
