Comfort Zone

Veritas offers the ultimate oenophile’s choice of libation. But that’s not all. Executive Chef Gregory Pugin’s cuisine also offers a tingle for the taste buds. If you’d like to know a little more about what to expect before you arrive, please read on.

Reservations
Reservations are strongly recommended, if not required.

Seating
Seating at Veritas is more than comfortable and includes a variety of options. You can sit in the lounge area and watch the passersby on 20th Street, for instance, or you can sit in the bar in higher backed leather armless chairs. Or you can sit in the main dining room, either in a banquette along the wall, in one of the semicircular banquettes in one of the two corners (we would recommend those for a special occasion or for a little more privacy) or in freestanding armless chairs, which are brown leather, incredibly comfortable and about 18 inches wide. Tables for four are about 34 inches square and are generously spaced throughout the dining room. You should have no problem with your neighbor overhearing your conversation.

Atmosphere
Perfect for a special occasion, Veritas is an oenophile’s dream. Owner Gino Diaferia could not be more lovely or accommodating and our waiter, Stephen, was simply excellent. Although the restaurant has gentle music playing, neither that nor the din from the bar (where you can now order a la carte) is overwhelming. This is the perfect place for a business dinner, if you’d like to impress a client, or to treat your favorite wine enthusiast for his or her birthday, anniversary or other special occasion. You needn’t worry about getting special attention; you'll get plenty of it. You won’t get rushed or pushed out, either; the attentive staff realizes you are here for the experience, and experience you will.

Restrooms
The restrooms at Veritas have same-level access and are gently tucked away from the main dining room.

Dress Code
The dress code at Veritas is smart casual. We've not noticed any overly casual attire.

Parking
Veritas is easily accessible by taxi, subway and bus. Or you can drive your own car. If you do, two pay parking lots are located on East 21st Street between Broadway and Park Avenue South. Street parking is also available. The most convenient subway is the 6 or the R at the 23rd Street station. You can also take the N, Q, 4 or 5 to the Union Square Station.

Awards
Veritas received the James Beard Foundation award for Outstanding Wine Service in 2005, as did Timothy Kopec, its wine director and partner. The award recognizes excellence through a presentation of the list, knowledge of the staff and efforts to educate the customers. The restaurant has also been awarded the Wine Spectator Magazine Grand Award in 2000. With Executive Chef Gregory Pugin at the helm, we certainly expect additional accolades for Veritas, and continued recognition of its exceptional global wine list.

*Please note that the restaurants featured at TravelsinTaste.com may have changed their personnel, menu, pricing, decor, hours of operation, etc., since our last visit. The competitive and creative nature of the fine dining scene virtually assures that changes will occur on a frequent basis in order to make diners happier, meals more pleasurable and visits more frequent. Given their frequent fluctuations, most restaurants welcome inquiries about their current hours, menu and more.
