    Hand-Crafted Ginger Shrimp Dumplings

At Ben Pao, where the focus is on regional Chinese cuisine, Executive Chef Jim Hoveke specializes in contemporary versions of traditional classics from each of China's four regions: Hunan, Sichuan, Canton and Beijing. The restaurant's goal is to provide authentic Chinese dishes, reinterpreted to satisfy the Midwestern palate. In addition to favorites like Mongolian beef and sesame chicken, diners can therefore enjoy "new" Chinese creations like tangerine chicken and cherry bomb shrimp, as well as Western desserts made with an Eastern twist, such as chocolate banana egg rolls and chocolate spring rolls. Whatever you order, the emphasis is always on family-style dining. At the restaurant's largest tables, food is therefore presented on a large lazy Susan so that everything can be easily sampled by everyone. Although it does provide carryout and delivery, Ben Pao is not your typical Chinese takeout. There's no MSG here. Instead, prized ingredients include locally made tofu, fresh-peeled water chestnuts, USDA prime beef, heirloom pork and locally made chow fun noodles. In addition, the restaurant offers daily specials, a special gluten free menu for guests with wheat allergies, a group share menu for $23.95 per person and a fireworks menu that allows spice-seeking guests to choose one of four spicy three-course meals based on their desired level of heat. Egg Rolls (hand rolled daily, with Chinese vegetables, red peppers, onions, cilantro, peanuts and a house-made peanut dressing): Classic Chicken and Shrimp (served with Chinese hot mustard and sweet and sour dipping sauces, $4.95); Spicy Sichuan Chicken (served with Chinese hot mustard and sweet and sour dipping sauces, $4.95).

Signature Starters: Crispy Garlic Tofu (a house specialty, sesame crusted, served with signature garlic sauce and chives, $4.95); Hand-Crafted Ginger Shrimp Dumplings (shrimp dumplings, spicy honey soy, Sichuan chili oil, fresh ginger and chives, $6.95); Chicken Lettuce Wraps (chicken soong style iceberg lettuce cups with chopped chicken, shiitakes, fresh-peeled water chestnuts and scallions with crispy rice noodles and pineapple-hoisin dipping sauce, $6.95); Crab Rangoon Chopstix (jumbo lump crab meat, deli-style cream cheese, fresh-peeled water chestnuts, chives and sweet chili dipping sauce, $7.95); Crispy Spiced Calamari (fresh ginger, cilantro and sweet chili dipping sauce, $7.95).
