Sommelier Smackdown, the spirited wine pairing competition and dinner hosted by NIOS restaurant and wine bar, returns next Tuesday, Nov 17.  For this latest battle of the grapes, NIOS’ master sommelier Emily Wines will defend her impressive winning streak (4-0) against one of the city’s most formidable wine heavyweights, Hristo Zisovski, chef sommelier at Jean Georges.  The contestants will deftly pair their wine selections with NIOS’ three-course market-driven menu, including Butter Poached Oysters with Pork Belly, Caviar and Uni; Slow Cooked Duck Breast with Bacon and “Pastrami” jus; and Tempura Pears with Goat Milk Sorbet.  Diners will vote on their favorite pairings and the winner takes home the Sommelier Smackdown championship belt and the bragging rights that accompany it.
