On the fourth Thursday in November, Americans sit down to turkey dinners in order to celebrate Thanksgiving. And although they’re still eating leftovers, Christmas has already come for the wine lovers among them. That’s because the third Thursday in November is “Beaujolais Noveau Day” in France.

gdbbn

Every year, Beaujolais Noveau begins at one past midnight on that third Thursday, a week before Thanksgiving in America. At that time, bottles of Beaujolais Noveau — a red wine made from Gamay grapes that’s produced in the Beaujolais region of France — are packed in crates, loaded on trucks and whisked away to Paris, where they’re either consumed immediately by thirsty Parisians in crowded bistros or shipped to wine connoisseurs in other parts of the world, who’ll repeat in their own countries the Parisian tradition of racing to the local bar, pub, tavern, winery or market in order to taste the first Beaujolais Noveau of the season.

Beaujolais Noveau isn’t just a day, and it isn’t just a wine. It’s a global phenomenon. It began in 1938, when the French government began regulating where, when and how its citizens could produce and drink the “new Beaujolais,” which until that point was imbibed locally straight from the producers’ barrels during a drunken free-for-all that began as soon as the harvest was available. In 1951, after World War II, Beaujolais Noveau began to catch on in other regions of France, so the governing body in Beaujolais set an official Beaujolais Noveau release date of Nov. 15.  In 1985, that date was changed to the third Thursday in November. To this day, French law prohibits the sale of Beaujolais Noveau before midnight on that day — in France or in other countries, where importers must agree not to sell the wine early.

Because it’s embargoed until the third Thursday in November, that day is marked by massive celebrations throughout France, where the streets are adorned with banners reading, “Le Beaujolais Noveau Est Arrivé!” or “The New Beaujolais Has Arrived!” People line up all over at their favorite bars and markets in order to drink their first glass and buy their first bottle. Now a global event, the parties start in Japan, where November’s third Thursday arrives first. In the United States, bars, restaurants and wine shops from California to New York hold special tasting events. No matter where you live, it’s a race — and the thirstiest people always win.

Although the official day has already passed, now is still the best time to enjoy the fruits of Beaujolais Noveau. By most critics’ accounts, the wine itself isn’t especially good, as it’s fermented for only a few weeks. In fact, it’s just 10 short weeks from vine to glass. Still, if you love wine, the Beaujolais Noveau is a can’t-miss vintage because it’s considered the wine of the people. Purple-pink and remarkably lightweight, the wine tends to be fruity and is often served lightly chilled. For that reason, critics say it’s best imbibed in the spring rather than late fall.

Whether you drink it warm or cold, however, in April or November, the Beaujolais Noveau is bottled with a sense of urgency and meant to be drunk with a sense of immediacy. Even if you didn’t wait in line on Nov. 19, it’s therefore best to pick up a bottle before Jan. 1 and drink it before next year’s harvest. Heck, go pick up a bottle now and drink it tonight. Consider it an early Christmas present.

Restaurant famous for twisted farm food makes its way to the Las Vegas Strip

Imperial Palace is proud to announce that one of Sin City’s favorite eateries, Hash House A Go Go will open its second Las Vegas location inside the hotel-casino on Dec. 10.  Hash House A Go Go is famous for its creative menu offerings, over-sized portions, unique presentation and a tradition of using only the freshest ingredients.

“Hash House A Go Go has such a loyal customer base, we’re confident it’ll be a draw to both locals and tourists alike,” said Rick Mazer, President of Imperial Palace. “It’s a fresh, funky dining experience and there’s not currently anything like it on the Strip.”

hh_exterior_295x225

The first Hash House A Go Go opened in San Diego in 2000 and became an instant success. Years later, Jim Rees convinced owners of the San Diego-based restaurant to expand outside of California. With partners Bill Underhill and Jim Nyberg, RUN Restaurants was created to make way for the Hash House A Go Go opening in Las Vegas in 2005. A local and tourist favorite, the restaurant’s concept of twisted farm food has become a success throughout the city. Since 2005, Hash House A Go Go has been featured on The Food Network’s “Rachel Ray’s Vacation,” the Travel Channel’s “Man v. Food,” the Fine Living Network’s “Martha Stewart,” NBC’s “Dr. Phil” and ABC’s “What Would You Do?”

“Big food is back in. One would be hard pressed to come up with a more Gastronomic creation. ” - New York Times

“If you ever go to Las Vegas you’ve got to go to Hash House A Go Go to eat.  The food is great and they will really strap the food bag on you.”  Dr. Phil McGraw - The Dr. Phil Show

“The Dinner Menu is where the Hash House A Go Go pulls out its really big guns.  It’s not often that a restaurant manages to do something totally original, but Hash House A Go Go has done just that.”    -Las Vegas City Life

Hash House A Go Go offers patrons an exhaustive list of breakfast, lunch and dinner options. Some of its standout, signature dishes include Sage Fried Chicken, stacked with bacon waffles, hot maple caramel reduction and crowned with fried leeks; the HH Famous Roasted Chicken Pot Pie, an upside down crust stuffed with house roasted chicken, red potato, veggies and pan gravy served with mashed potatoes; and Andy’s Crispy Indiana Style Hand-Hammered Pork Tenderloin with griddled smoked mozzarella, caramelized onions, fresh spinach, Portobello mushrooms, house charred tomato and bar b’ que cream all served with horseradish mashed potatoes and grilled corn o’ cobb..The restaurant also features a bar, complete with a full menu of adult beverages and creative cocktails.

Founder and executive chef Craig “Andy” Beardslee says his restaurant has two main objectives, “To keep the fun in food while pulling from the experiences of farm fresh agriculture, live stock, and old recipes with a twist and to maintain a level of excitement & entertainment within the dining experience, while ensuring excellent service each and every day.”

The Imperial Palace location will operate under the direction of  Hash House A Go Go co-owner and Nevada Restaurant Association’s 2009 “Nevada Restaurateur of the Year,” Jim Rees.

“We couldn’t be more excited to bring Hash House to the Strip,” said Rees. “Since we opened our doors in 2005, our customers have been asking when we’ll have a Strip location; I am delighted that we are finally able to make that request a reality.”

Hash House A Go Go has earned a myriad of accolades in recent years including: “Las Vegas Review Journal Best Breakfast 2008″ Editors Pick; “AOL City Guide Best Breakfast in Las Vegas 2007 & 2008″; “Las Vegas Weekly Readers Choice Best Breakfast 2007 & 2008″; “Las Vegas Life - Best Sandwich 2007 - Big O’ Crispy Pork Tenderloin”; “Las Vegas Review Journal Best Place for Breakfast 2007″ on-line readers poll; “Las Vegas Review Journal Summer Sandwich Tour 2006″ - “Best Sandwich” ; “Spin Magazine - October 2007 - 72 Hours in Vegas - Best Breakfast”; Travelocity - Hash House A Go Go Las Vegas “Top Insiders Spot 2007″; “The 5 Best New Restaurants in Summerlin” 2006 Hash House A Go Go - What’s On.
