We’ve all heard of trapeze artists dancing high above the ground, but what if your wine steward could do that? At two restaurants, they do.

Dressed in black body suits, the wine stewardesses perform gymnastics while suspended in mid-air. They execute aerial tumbles and flips-all while retrieving bottles of wine ordered by on-looking diners.

At Aureole in Las Vegas, these aerial wine artists are called “wine angels.” The angels perform and retrieve wine bottles in the restaurant’s 42-foot-tall glass-enclosed wine cellar. To reach the dining room, diners descend stairs that wrap around the “tower,” which holds nearly 10,000 bottles of wine and is built of steel and laminated glass.

Inspired by the movie Mission Impossible, the tower was designed so that wine stewardesses attached to a computerized four-cabled pulley system could retrieve wine bottles. Once strapped in, the angels are lifted up and down the tower’s seven levels.

About nine years later, inspired by Aureole, Chicago steakhouse Texas de Brazil added a similar wine cellar to their new location on the Magnificent Mile.

The cellar at Texas de Brazil is a glass-enclosed 40-foot-tall, two-story wine room with over 1,400 bottles of wine and also features aerial wine artists in black cat suits.

The wine artists at this Windy City locale are able to perform their stunts both vertically and horizontally and control their movement on transparent cables that move by commands from a hand-held controller. Additional safety features, including a safety cable and an emergency off button, have also been installed.

Aerial wine artistry is a rarity, but its style and entertainment value have the ability to turn a good dining experience into an exquisite one.
