The Blue Door Restaurant and Brasserie is located in Miami's South Beach, inside the Delano Hotel on Collins Avenue. The Delano, a 1947 landmark with a distinctive Art Deco facade, was originally designed by Robert Swartburg and named after President Franklin Delano Roosevelt. Ian Schrager, one of the cofounders of Studio 54 and the Palladium, completely renovated the Delano to the tune of over $20 million before reopening it in June 1995. No doubt some of this rumored renovation cost was spent on French designer Philippe Starck's white-on-white, New Design vision. Schrager and Starck's other eye-catching collaborations have included the Royalton, the Paramount and the Hudson hotels in New York and the Mondrian in Los Angeles. Probably best known as one of Madonna's properties-she was a part owner at one point-both the hotel and the restaurant continue to be a Miami magnet for celebrities; this is the place to spot Hollywood luminaries and South Beach savvy fashionistas alike.
Behind the Blue Door are famous restaurateur Jeffrey Chodorow and Chef Claude Troisgros, who've teamed up to create a restaurant that successfully provides an eclectic combination of French and Brazilian cuisine with a hint of South Florida. The concept is delicious, which is not at all surprising given that the Troisgros family has long been known for its culinary delights; Claude's grandfather famously paired fish with red wine while his father and uncle, along with Paul Bocuse, were among the first to promote nouvelle cuisine. Of course, the menu isn't the only reason to eat at the Blue Door. The atmosphere, which includes a formal dining room, a more casual lounge-the Brasserie-and a lush outdoor terrace, is equally delicious. Should you choose to dine al fresco on the outdoor terrace, you'll have a pleasant view of the surrounding orchard and the Philippe Starck water salon while the warm ocean breezes envelop you with their gentle whisper. The terrace echoes the romantic, ethereal theme of the formal dining room with flowing white drapes that are flanked between thick columns with white tops and brown bases that blend into a dark brown wooden floor. Large mini green trees are strategically placed within the terrace and add to the outdoor dining ambience. So when you're in Miami, open the Blue Door for a truly unique meal in a truly romantic retreat.
