At last! The Chef of the Century finally arrives in New York. And there could not be a more fitting place for him to hang his chef's coat than at the Four Seasons Hotel. Ty Warner, the multibillionaire behind the Beanie Baby craze, who's also a well-known hotel, resort and golf club magnate, made magic when he decided to bring Joel Robuchon to New York to the Four Seasons Hotel. Working in tandem, well-known architect I.M. Pei and designer Pierre-Yves Rochon, who designed the previous L'Ateliers-there are six of them worldwide-created an Atelier that's entirely different from its siblings, yet comfortably similar. L'Atelier, French for "an artist's studio," was intended to provide an informal dining atmosphere, unlike Robuchon's previous three star Michelin restaurants, which were quite formal, while still showcasing the classic, clean fare for which its namesake is known. That goal is achieved by bringing the kitchen into the dining room, where customers can watch as Robuchon's creations unfold before them. Once you view and taste those creations, you'll know that you've arrived somewhere very special. Despite the show kitchen, the restaurant offers a quiet oasis away from the busy Manhattan streets outside; just walking in calms your mind. This is a gastronome's paradise, located in the middle of Midtown. Adding to the Zen-like calm is a curious absence of cell phone conversation, as the restaurant asks that you refrain from using mobile devices while you're inside. Now, isn't that a calming feeling already?
