Whether you go in through the VIP entrance or the main door, once you enter Nobu 57 you are immediately transported to a world that is all about waves and water movement. David Rockwell designed the décor with Japanese fishing villages in mind, and so you'll notice a gentle, fluid water theme throughout the restaurant. The unique bar, constructed of gigantic wood planks harvested from massive tree trunks, and finished to a lusterous high gloss, awaits you upon entering. Up above, at the top of a dramatic staircase, is the actual restaurant. Not to worry though, if you've got a slight issue with stairs, there is an elevator and the hostess is happy to escort you. The bar is made of black walnut set atop a luminous onyx. There are small tables and chairs in the lounge area, and backless stools at the bar. While you're in the restaurant, don't be surprised if you look up and think you see undulating waves or a shimmering school of fish – that's the mesmerizing effect of several chandeliers made with thousands of abalone shells that sway in the two story high windows.

Subtle backlighting illuminates the bar and that gentle light helps draw your eyes upward and toward the impressive sake barrels that hang from the ceiling and mark the way up to the restaurant at the top of stairs. If you're feeling especially glamorous, you might want to take your time on the stairs since these steps are the focal point of seeing and being seen when you arrive or leave the restaurant. As you ascend the stairs, the six columns of floating sake barrels will be to your left. Once upstairs, you'll find that the restaurant is actually divided into three different sections (and atmospheres): the casual dining area, the sushi bar, and the elegant main dining area. All the areas are well-lit with dramatic backlighting and the lighting works beautifully with the terrazzo walls accented with bamboo embedded in a bubble like pattern. If you look down while you're in the restaurant, you'll find that even the floors are patterned in a way to recall waves.
