Stephen Starr, Bon Appétit’s “Restaurateur of the Year” in 2005, has a culinary empire that includes such notable restaurants as Buddakan and Morimoto in Philadelphia and New York City. In 2009, he opened Steak 954, a luxury boutique steakhouse in the oceanfront W Hotel Fort Lauderdale. Executed by Chef de Cuisine Jason Smith (previously Chef de Cuisine alongside Govind Armstrong at Table 8 in Miami), the menu blends classic steakhouse offerings with modern flavors and twists. Chef Smith's career inspirations began in his early years, when he was taught by his mother, who grew and sold edible flowers to restaurants in his hometown of Indianapolis. Chef Smith moved to Miami and graduated from the prestigious Johnson & Wales University with an A.O.S. in Culinary Arts. Having a flair for Florida cuisine, he stayed in Miami and worked first at Nemo under Executive Chef Michael Schwarts before moving on to a number of South Florida restaurants, including WISH with E. Michael Reidt, Pearl and the Biltmore Hotel with Geoffrey Cousineau. Steak 954 boasts more than 260 wines with a significant half-bottle selection and a plethora of handcrafted cocktails.
