Marriott's Harbor Beach Resort and Spa is one of the Marriott's flagship properties. The only hotel directly on the ocean in Fort Lauderdale -- other hotels are situated across the street -- this newly renovated four-diamond three-star resort lies on 16 acres of waterfront property. Not only can you splash, swim and play a variety of water sports, but you can also relax to your heart's content. That's because the hotel includes a 20,000 sq. ft. spa for those who need to recharge after a hard day at the pool. Given the hotel's fresh-feeling atmosphere, it's no surprise that when the Marriott was looking to place a fine dining restaurant in its midst, it tapped Chef Dean Max. With his voluminous experience -- his grandfather was a chef, his father had his own farm and he himself has studied in Florence -- and his penchant for using the freshest of ingredients, this Chef has created a true jewel on the beach. You won't even think you're in a hotel once you step into 3030 Ocean; you'll think you're in paradise.

Upon entering Marriot's Harbor Beach Resort and Spa you'll find yourself in a dramatic high-ceiling lobby. The restaurant, 3030 Ocean, is toward the back and at the left. Prior to arriving at the hostess station you will encounter the bar. Made of wood, it has a highly polished top and is somewhat J-shaped, as it angles slightly into the restaurant. The stools are actually the most comfortable we've seen: They are large-backed wooden chairs with arms, upholstered with a red leather upholstery. Located in the short part of the "J," this intimate portion of the bar lies directly in front of the restaurant, holds about six chairs or so and is backed with light wood walls, a flat screen television and a beautiful backlit column with three open chrome shelves for bottles. The column itself is fancifully decorated with abstract gold ornaments that resemble fish. Lamps with cream-colored shades dot the bar, the base of which is a combination of light and cherry colored wood. The latter is present in the form of squares around the former. Once you swing around the corner, the longer arm of the "J" holds about 11 or so armless upholstered bar chairs, with striped hues of gold, green, red and peach. The cream-colored shaded lights continue here. Although the back of the bar is also a light colored wood, the scene is different. Right after you've entered, for instance, is a glass, mirror-backed cabinet that's framed in light colored wood with multiple glass shelves holding liquor bottles. Three mirrors are placed on a wooden overhang and spot lit. In between the mirrors are four pseudo windows with light wooden shades. There are also about four low oval tables, each with four light wood and red upholstered armed chairs that create a casual lounge atmosphere. This is separated from the main area of the restaurant by a wooden divider that ends slightly above the chair, upon which sits a short glass shade with horizontal frosted stripes. All in all, the look is of casual elegance. That's not all, though; if you're interested in sitting at the bar, you won't be bored. Not only is it a happening to be, but its cocktail list is extensive and includes a number of signature cocktails -- such as the "3030 Ocean," with Skyy vodka, Tanqueray gin, Bacardi Silver, triple sec, sour mix, blue curacao and lemon soda -- and martinis -- like the "3030 Key Lime," with Ketel One vodka, Keke Beach Key lime liqueur, Midori melon liqueur, lime juice and a splash of cream, served in a graham cracker-rimmed glass. It also has an extensive list of wines and other liquors.
